Pokerstars Vs Full Tilt Poker – New Records Set
A few days ago I made a post about Full Tilt Poker’s attempt to set a world record for the largest poker tournament ever played. Full Tilt succeeded in breaking the old record, held by Pokerstars, of 35,000 players but due to some cut-throat marketing by Pokerstars the record belongs once again to them. This is only the first of many PR battles to come I would imagine. Here is a time-line of events in this on-going battle between Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker.
Pokerstars Vs Full Tilt Poker
- January 5th, 2009 – Pokerstars sets a Guinness World Record for the largest poker tournament. Their tournament had 35,000 entries.
- July 15th, 2009 - Full Tilt Poker announces that they will attempt to beat the current record of 35,000 players set by Pokerstars as a part of their 5th birthday celebration.
- July 18th, 2009 – In an excellent example of cut-throat marketing Pokerstar’s announced they will attempt to set a new world record with 65,000 players in a single tournament. I just checked and they succeeded in setting a new record. They planned this event to start 1 hour before Full Tilt Poker’s attempt.
So the world record for the largest poker tournament has been broken and set twice in the same day. Pokerstars is currently the leader with 65,000 entries. In Full Tilt’s defense though at least their tournament had a $5 entry. The tournament at Pokerstars only had a $1 entry. Both rooms lured players in offering huge overlays.
I am expecting some more battles in the weeks to come. The management at Full Tilt Poker must have been furious when they heard that Pokerstars was doing this. This is just one of the opening battles of the Pokerstars Vs. Full Tilt Poker War.
To the best of my knowledge this is the first clear attempt by Pokerstars to “steal thunder” from a promotion hosted by another poker room. The only thing I know for sure is that the real winners of the marketing battle that is sure to come will be us players.
