Mixed Game Strategy
One of the most popular ways to play poker nowadays is by entering a mixed poker game. These games feature multiple versions of poker under one name such as H.O.R.S.E, Ha poker, eight game mix and others. The prevalence of the mixed poker game is definitely growing, with such recent additions as H.E.R.O.S. poker and H.O.S.E. poker. The letters in these acronyms stand for the games that will be played in the mix. For example, in H.O.R.S.E. poker, the mix is Holdem, Omaha Hi/Lo, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Eight or Better Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo. The 8-game mix or eight game is a mix of eight games that actually have the acronym T.H.O.R.S.E.H.A., but is usually just called eight game because T.H.O.R.S.E.H.A is a bit harder to remember and to pronounce.
Many Games to Master in Mixed Poker
The brilliant aspect of a mixed poker game is that it requires for the players of the game to have (at least somewhat) good skills in each of the games that are being played in the mixed game in order to be successful at all. For example, the mixed poker game of H.O.R.S.E. requires that you be a bit competent at least in five different, individually unique games. This is the most challenging part of any mixed game strategy – to become an at least decent player of all the variation that will be played around the table. If some level of proficiency is not shown in at least four of the five games in horse poker, for instance, then winning one game will usually just mean that you lose to another.
Practicing Individual Games in Mixed Poker
Because of this, the best strategy for any variation of mixed poker is to practice wholeheartedly, and not just at the games that are included in the mix that you understand or are better at – but at all the games, especially those that you are not as skilled in playing. Whether you practice each individual game at home with your regular poker crew or online in any of the great online gaming rooms that are set up specifically for poker enthusiasts, practice is essential to become a forceful mixed game player and without it, you don’t stand a chance at winning or becoming profitable in the grand scheme of things.
Learning Your Opponents’ Weaknesses and Strengths
Mixed poker players who are just started out are best advised to immediately detect any inadequacies in their competition. Just as you are likely not a top player of all the games that make up the mixed poker game you are playing, the same is true of the other people you see sitting around the mixed poker table. You can use this to your advantage. Watch for those who play timidly during certain games and more aggressively during others. This is your cue that the player is well-versed in one over the other because it shows through with many “checks” and few “bets”. But the same player is betting aggressively most of the time in other games – this means that they are more confident in that game. Inversely and on the flip side of this, other players are likely to be sizing you up to detect the weaknesses and strengths that you have in order to use them against you. By keeping a confident approach throughout the entire game, you can masque your true skills and sneak up behind them with a one-two punch to win games that they think you are likely weaker at.
