Doyle Brunson Playing The HORSE 10K Commerce Event
Doyle Brunson announced in his blog yesterday that he’s planning on playing the 10K HORSE poker event on the 16th of the month. The World Poker Tour event is a new addition to the WPT lineup at the Commerce this year and will likely attract a fair number of heavy hitters. With the popularity of traditional Hold’em tournaments, these high buy in HORSE events are starting to become the preferred real estate for the games best players.
The prevailing logic is that since the Hold’em events have so many unknown (Internet) players, it’s a crap shoot as to wins the event. With HORSE, the game changes and thus requires players to have a more rounded array of moves and game knowledge. This is something that the average Internet player lacks and as a result, makes them shy away from the big HORSE events. The pro players love this however, because it gives them an arena to showcase their skills and play against the best players in the world.
The idea to host a 10K HORSE event at the Commerce came from the (relatively) new Tournament Director, Matt Savage. When Matt took over the reigns at Commerce, the poker world was abuzz as to what (if any) changes he would make. He immediately made very positive changes to the cash games offered, the daily tournament events, and the major events hosted at the Commerce. The 10K HORSE tournament will be the first major mixed poker game event this year. It’s also going to be broadcast on an upcoming WPT episode, marking more progress for this game that’s still “new” to most poker observers.
